Extraction is the initial and significant step in purifying active ingredients from plant materials. Traditional methods like heat reflux and cold extraction are widely based on an appropriate selection of solvents, agitation and rate of mass transfer to increase the chemical solubility. Thus, traditional methods require long extraction time with low extraction yield and high energy consumption. Ultra High pressure-assisted extraction (UHPE), works under very high pressure ranging from 100 to 800 MPa and has been recognized as an environment-friendly technology by the Food and Drug Administration. Application of ultra high pressure can increase the rate of mass transfer, solvent permeability and secondary metabolite diffusion in plant cells. Recent studies have confirmed that the HPE technique could significantly shorten the extraction time and obtain higher extraction yield. In addition, the antioxidant, antityrosinase and anticancer activities of UHPE are significantly higher than conventional extraction. This webinar presentation demonstrates the application of the high pressure-assisted extraction, using litchi and longan fruits as the examples.Speaker 1: K. NAGENDRA Prasad is a Research Fellow at Chemical Engineering Discipline, School of Engineering, Monash University, Sunway campus, Malaysia. He obtained his Ph.D. Degree in Botany in India and worked as Post-Doctoral Researcher in China and also at Dept. of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM, Malayisa. He has over 50 international publications, 6 book chapters and 1 book. His research interest includes Food Chemistry, Antioxidants, Nutraceuticals, Food Processing and Food Composition.Speaker 2: Dr. Galanakis is the co-administrator of "Galanakis Laboratories" (Chania, Greece), a SME aiming at the analysis of wine, food, beverage and environmental samples as well as the consultancy of related industries and local producers. Ηe is also the co-inventor of the patent (WO/2008/082343) entitled “Olive Waste Recovery” and the co-founder of Phenoliv AB (Lund, Sweden), a spin-out company that targets the industrial production of valuable compounds from olive mill wastewater(OMW) and other agricultural by-products. He is an Editorial Board Member of Food Research International.
