The College of Biotechnology, as a faculty of the Portuguese Catholic University (, has been producing high-level research and development and training in the biotechnology area for more than 20 years. Activities are developed along two main branches: Academic Division and Extension Division. 

As a consequence of the recent implementation of the Bologna Declaration, ESB has reformulated its degrees – which are now divided in two sequential cycles - undergraduate and master degrees.

Post-graduate studies include research activities through a range of Ph.D. programmes and Post-Graduate diplomas – especially in the biotechnology sectors of food and environment. ESB has recently reformulated his PhD degree on Biotechnology, according to 3rd cycle Bologna recommendations. This 3rd cycle on Biotechnology includes the branches: Food Science and Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology and Chemistry.

ESB promotes transnational mobility of students and staff between ESB and other institutions (

ESB is strongly involved in collaborative programmes, especially within EU, USA and Latin America (e.g. SOCRATES-ERASMUS, LEONARDO, FOTAN, TEMPUS, FLAD, ALFA, FP7) and national programmes (PRODEP).

Moreover, ESB has been playing a crucial role in the coordination of thematic networks: ISEKI_Food3 and ISEKI_Mundus 2 (
