Sustainable development goes beyond being a purely environmental issue, and includes economic viability as well as social acceptability. As demand for food increase and climate change and ecosystem degradation impose new constraints, sustainable development has an important role to play in preserving natural resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, halting biodiversity loss and caring for valued landscapes.
